Helping you go from "good to great"

From the minute you join Minters, we’re committed to helping you grow and succeed in your legal career.  At every stage of your Minters career, we provide structured learning opportunities, both on the job and through a formalised training programme.

You'll be exposed to great work:

We want you to experience what it is really like to be a lawyer.  This means including you in every aspect of the legal work we’re involved with, from attending mediations to observing ground-breaking commercial deals as they unfold.  We deliberately limit our summer clerk numbers to ensure you get real opportunities to participate as a true member of the team.

As a full service commercial law firm, we have a wide variety of practice areas.  You will get the opportunity to work in two teams as a summer clerk; based on your own preferences.

You will also get exposure to great clients - we represent several of NZ’s most recognizable brands, including 2degrees, the New Zealand Rugby Union, Goldman Sachs, JB Were, ANZ, BNZ, Westpac, AMP, Shell, AXA, Price Waterhouse Coopers, SPCA, KordaMentha - to name but a few.

You’ll work alongside great people:

Our summer clerks are each assigned a supervising partner and a senior lawyer to work alongside. These people are experts in their field and will give you a good grounding in their respective practice areas.  You’ll also have a buddy to help you navigate your experience in the team.

You’ll get a tailored summer clerk training programme:

During your summer with the firm, you will be given a tailored training programme, including:

  • An overview of the business
  • An introduction to each division
  • Working with a secretary
  • Technology training in all of our systems
  • Research Skills
  • Writing Skills
  • Presentation Skills
  • Listening Skills

Our commitment to your learning and development doesn’t stop there!

We have a comprehensive graduate development programme, taking our graduate law clerks through everything from contract issues, receiverships, liquidity & solvency, to witnessing affidavits, how to be a good junior lawyer and how to write legal opinions.

All staff have the opportunity to keep their legal education up-to-date by attending relevant:

  • Divisional in-house seminars;
  • Courses, conferences, seminars and workshops run by the New Zealand Law Society, Lexis Nexis, CCH (for example); and
  • In-house courses run by external providers such as negotiation skills, presentation skills, coaching skills, business development skills, mentoring and leadership skills.

Our MentorME programme is available to all staff.  Mentors and mentees are carefully matched across practice groups to give staff an opportunity to receive objective mentoring away from reporting lines.  Our mentoring programme is instrumental in building networks and relationships within the firm.

We also support our staff through a number of resilience and wellness initiatives to keep you in top shape both in mind and body!
